Southbank crane update - boom removal to start Friday

Statement from WorkSafe's Executive Director of Health and Safety, Marnie Williams, in relation to removing the collapsed crane from a construction site at Southbank:

“Work continues to progress on the difficult task of dismantling the crane. The complex procedure of detaching the boom is expected to begin at around 7am tomorrow.

“This will involve the use of two cranes, which adds to the significant complexity of the undertaking.

“As the removal of the boom could affect the stability of the remainder of the crane and the structures on which it rests, it remains too early to determine when roads might be re-opened.

“WorkSafe continues to stress that the safety of workers and the public are our number one priority.

"Police and VicRoads will be kept informed of progress."
